Below, lists of articles, by author.
We are constantly updating our main Folklife West (folk club etc news) website.
This must be a priority as FWJ is only possible as part of Folklife West magazine
- FWJ would not be viable as a stand-alone publication, as part of Folklife West it reaches a much wider audience.
Volunteer(s) wanted to help with indexing; we offer you a year's free Folklife membership. Please contact [email protected]
Summary
1) Firstly, as soon as possible, quite simple, pasting info under heading "Articles, songs & tunes" into an Excel spreadsheet.
(we also list other info eg "Publications' News" but I regard "Articles, songs & tunes" as the priority).
2) Later, requiring someone more knowledgeable than me, a searchable database for "Articles, songs & tunes".
Details
1) This webpage has lists of articles, each list being one author.
We welcome volunteers who can assist by simply pasting those individual lists into a combined list in Excel format - something like this???
Author Title Title notes Issue: PDF A4; PDF US Date Page Emag
Adam, Helen ‘Gwenynen Gwent’ / ‘The Busy Bee of Gwent’ Welsh traditional tune with notes FT 64v2; FT 64-US 2020 May p6-7 n/a
Adam, Helen ‘Machynlleth’ Welsh traditional tune with notes FT 61v2 2019 May p43-44 n/a
Adam, Helen ‘Meillionen o Feirionnydd’ / ‘The Clover of Meirionnydd’ Welsh traditional tune with notes FT 62v2 2019 Sep p4-5 n/a
Davies, Gwilym: 'A New Year Song: Buff Blow’ Song + notes from GlosTrad website FT 52v4 2017 Jan p27 ft-52
2) Ideally, a completed Excel list as above would be converted to a searchable database with options of choosing by author, title, etc.
I have FileMaker 18, used for a simple member-records database (I started with an earlier version, kept upgrading to maintain that simple database).
In theory can be used for a complex database, accessible from web, but I don't know how.
Website provider (Weebly) tables are not suitable, so would have to be something downloadable from the site?
On Weebly's "Connect" plan @£4 a month, we can upload files up to 10mb, with total storage of 500mb. We'll reach that limit at some point !
Occasionally we need to split FT files, but usually 1 file per issue, now 2 per issue with US letter-size pdfs as well.
We would have to upgrade to their "Pro' plan @ £9 a month, to upload files up to 250mb, with unlimited storage.
Or move the site from Weebly.

- Issue: PDF A4: A4 PDF downloads for all issues. Some articles (originally-print only) added, they may be revised, hence v for pdf version number.
- PDF US: US-letter size pdfs for more recent issues. Emag: earlier issues also as "Issuu" e-magazines; may omit some articles originally-print only.
- I have Excel 2011 for Mac (works fine, not the latest). A volunteer could use a later version which I could use, or I could upgrade (tables from Weebly, our website provider, are not suitable - very basic).

FWJ 2006-2012; then FT 2012 to 2019

Background notes from Editor, Sam Simmons: Published separately to our Folk West, later Folklife West, FW magazine.
FWJ included some Folk Club & ‘folk’ review material. This magazine, published by Folklife, was intended to continue the work of the former ‘Somers Journal’ published by the Somers Folk Club. It started as “Worcestershire Folklife: the Folklife West Journal, Nº. 1” in Sept 2006, a special issue for Worcestershire, assisted by a Awards for All grant (covering 1 issue only). The contents included both ‘folklife’ and ‘folk club’ material. It was then published irregularly (due to lack of time and money) and over time, contents gradually became more focused on ‘folklife’, with ‘folk club’ elements (eg folk CDs) being transferred to our Folk West magazine. |

We would always have preferred to have a regularly-published magazine, but did not have the time & resources. Then I retired ! ----- bought a new computer & software, and so in Oct 2012 created the combined Folklife Quarterly - FQ - magazine.
FWJ was then renamed Folklife Traditions - FT, with the FT pages being published as part of the new combined FQ magazine. Changed name back to Folklife West, FW magazine in October 2018, as 3 times a year from January 2019. |
